February 2018 Meeting Print

The next meeting of 2018 will be on Monday 5th February, it starts at 8pm sharp in our usual venue of Ballyclare High School Lecture Theatre. Directions can be found here.

As many of you are well aware, the February meeting is always our very special Andrew Trimble Memorial Lecture. This year we have invited, from The University of Manchester, Dr. Rene Breton.

Rene will be giving us a talk titled 'The Secret Life of Pulsars'

About the talk: February marks 50 years since Lurgan born Jocelyn Bell Burnell and English radio astronomer Anthony Hewish made the announcement of the discovery of pulsars. In this talk Rene looks back on the last five decades of research into these incredible cosmic lighthouses.

This is Dr. Breton's first time with us and we are really excited to welcome him to our society and hear what promises to be a great talk.

As usual, the talk is free for all and if it is your first time with us you will be made very welcome!

About Dr. Rene Breton: I'm a Lecturer at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics at The University of Manchester since November 2014.

I fell in love with astronomy when I was a little boy and spent countless nights stargazing and dreaming about becoming a professional astronomer while I was growing up.

Here's a few facts about me:
Born and raised in Quebec City, Canada
PhD from McGill University in 2009 under the supervision of Vicky Kaspi.
I was a research fellow at the University of Toronto in Marten van Kerkwijk's group from 2008-2011.
I was a research fellow at the University of Southampton in Rob Fender's 4PISKY group from 2012-2013. I was also a lecturer there from 2013-2014.

Please note: Under 16's are very welcome but due to our child protection policy, we ask that they are accompanied by an adult.

As always we will have refreshments available after the meeting, a donation bucket is available at the door if you wish to support us in our work!

Hope to see you all there!
