November 2017 Meeting PDF Print E-mail

The next meeting of the 2017/ 2018 season is on Monday 6th November, it starts at 8pm sharp in our usual venue of Ballyclare High School Lecture Theatre. Directions can be found here.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome for the first time Dr. Jorrick Vink from Armagh Observatory.  The title of his talk is 'The First Stars and Black Holes in the Early Universe'.

About the talk: Within the blink of an eye after the Big Bang, the very First Stars in our Universe came into existence. These stars were massive beasts, shining brightly, and causing the Universe to light up.

Jorrick will present a Cosmic Transition from the Dark Ages to Enlightenment which we owe to these First Stars he will also discuss the key differences between the Sun-like stars that we see in our Milky Way today and the massive beasts that are thought to have caused the true moment of Cosmic Genesis. These massive beasts are also thought to be the objects that collapsed into "heavy" Black Holes that were recently discovered through Gravitational Waves, as predicted by Albert Einstein's Theory of General Relativity more than a century ago.

Please feel free to join us for what promises to be a very interesting talk!

About Dr. Vink: Jorick is a Research Astronomer at Armagh Observatory. He graduated at Utrecht University in the Netherlands in 2000, after having spent a year at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre. He worked at Imperial College London from 2001 onwards, and he was an RCUK Fellow in 2005, before moving to Armagh. Here he was Acting Director of Armagh Planetarium for 15 months in 2015-2016.

Please note: Under 16's are very welcome but due to our child protection policy, we ask that they are accompanied by an adult.

As always the talk is free, a donation bucket is available at the door if you wish to support us in our work! Refreshments are available (also free) after the meeting and so is some good chat!

Hope to see you all there!
