2
The Greek Myth
  • Orion was a powerful Hunter.
  • He fell in love with Merope, grandaughter of the Greek god Dionysis.
  • Told he could marry Merope by her father if he killed all the dangerous animals on the island of Chios.
  • He killed the animals (hence the lions mane in the pictures)
3
The Myth gets worse
  • Merope’s father failed to honor the deal.
  • Orion got drunk and had his way with Merope anyway.. Bad mistake.
  • Merope’s father was not a bit pleased and blinded Orion whilst he was still drunk.
  • Orion was not a bit pleased and had his sight restored by Helios the local telescope maker (actually the sun god).
4
Orion’s revenge
  • Orion was very angry and teamed up with a female hunter Artimis to kill every animal : eco-cide was threatened!
  • The gods were not pleased and created a large Scorpion (Scorpio) which stung the unfortunate Orion to death.
  • Artimis was not a bit pleased and arranged for Orion to be immortalised in the stars.
  • Good ‘Ol Artimis!
